Ever felt overwhelmed by the amount of information on healthy eating and discouraged that no-one else really addresses the elephant in the room:why is healthy so much expensive? Don’t worry, here are all the secrets to eating healthy without spending a fortune.
1.GET SMALLER PLATES
Research has shown that we eat way more today than ever before. Reducing food portions and eating 2 meals a day , not only saves money , it also keeps your body lean.
2. CHEW YOUR FOOD SLOWLY
In addition to eating less, chewing thoroughly facilitates the absorption of more nutrients from the food thus preventing overeating. Remember that food is to be enjoyed not inhaled.
3.SHOP AT YOUR LOCAL FARMERS MARKET
Produce at the farmers market is cheaper, fresher, tastier, and non toxic. My personal favorite is the McKinney Farmers Market and the Farmers Branch Farmers Market. Click here to find a farmers market closest to you.
4. BUY FROZEN VEGETABLES & FRUITS
While canned vegetables tend to lose a lot of nutrients during the preservation process, frozen vegetables and fruits are nearly as good as fresh nutritionally.
5.LIMIT MEAT CONSUMPTION
Cutting down meat consumption to once or twice a week has shown to have a positive impact on health and longevity amongst other things. Other protein sources such as legumes, hemp seeds, and eggs are all very inexpensive, nutritious and easy to prepare.
6. GROW YOUR OWN HERBS AND VEGETABLES
Not only is it therapeutic, it gives you a sense of fulfillment and completion. You’d be surprised what you can grow even in an apartment.
7. SHOP AT THE BULK SECTION
Bulk bins have the cheaper per ounce prices and keep for a long time. Sharing a membership with friends at Costco is another great idea. A recent spin through the aisles of Costco revealed a surprising number of wholesome offerings at affordable prices .
8. GO FOR STORE BRAND
It may not be the fanciest, but store brand products are a lot cheaper and tend to be on sale. Whole Foods for example offers additional sales on club members based on the items they tend to buy regularly. Club membership is Free.
9. COOK AT HOME
Did you know that you can feed a family of 4 for the price of one restaurant meal ?Cooking at home is always cheaper than eating out, so make it a habit!
10. STAY HYDRATED
When we do not drink enough water, the body often mistakes thirst for hunger. When feeling hungry, drink a glass of water and wait 15 minutes before determining if you are truly hungry.
